The need for a more agile, scalable, and integrated approach to technology

With an ambitious growth strategy driven by product development and acquisitions, including 6 acquisitions over the past three years, Codan recognised the pressing need for a global HR and ERP solution. Operating with multiple disparate systems across regions was no longer sustainable. This urgency was further heightened as its SAP ECC6 system neared the end of maintenance support, necessitating an upgrade to SAP S/4HANA to ensure compliance and future scalability.

A key objective was integrating Codan's workforce, sales offices, and seven manufacturing plants into a unified cloud solution. With a strong pipeline of new product development and ongoing bolt-on acquisitions, seamless integration became a critical competitive advantage. To achieve this, Codan aimed to simplify its technology landscape, rationalise licensing, modernise end-of-life systems, and eliminate disparate, inefficient solutions.

Managing complex global operations, including an expansive product portfolio, a vast network of customers, partners, and suppliers, and a workforce of over 900 employees across 11 countries, posed significant challenges.

The solution

As an existing SAP user, Codan chose to modernise to the latest SAP cloud innovations and sought an experienced partner to drive its digital transformation. Based on a strong foundation of trust, an existing relationship, and a reputation for cloud delivery excellence, reinforced by a track record of successful implementations, Codan selected DyFlex Solutions as its strategic partner. The transformation was structured around a comprehensive program of work that included three key projects.

SuccessFactors Full Suite Global Deployment

Implemented new SuccessFactors modules Employee Central, Employee Central Payroll, Onboarding, Succession and Compensation to complement their existing SuccessFactors solution footprint. The Recruitment, Performance and Learning modules were extended for global deployment and integrated with the new modules to deliver a fully integrated HCM solution.

Organisational scope included 4 organisational entities across 9 countries and in 4 languages. Payroll to all Australian employees across three payroll entities.

RISE with S/4HANA, including SAP Analytics Cloud and Fiori

After conducting a thorough assessment, DyFlex recommended a brownfields approach for Codan's migration from ECC6 to the latest version of SAP S/4HANA. The proposed strategy involved a technical upgrade to S/4HANA, focusing solely on implementing mandatory S/4HANA changes to minimise both system and process changes and, in turn, reducing the impact on users, while simultaneously developing a roadmap for further improvements and enhancements.

The migration from SAP ECC6 to S/4HANA involved a technical conversion, accepting only S/4HANA mandatory changes and simplification items. The scope included migrating from an on-premises SAP environment to SAP’s RISE platform on Azure and transitioning from the existing Fiori Gateway hub model to the S/4HANA embedded model. A limited deployment of Fiori reporting applications and Analysis for Office pivot table reports was also undertaken. The project required custom code and integration remediation, as well as security adjustments to accommodate mandatory changes and deployed Fiori applications. Additionally, SAP fringe technologies such as Single-Sign-On, Cloud Connectors, Web Dispatchers, and SAP Cloud ALM were implemented and configured. The migration also involved moving OpenText IC4SAP and Vendor Invoice Management (VIM) to OpenText Core Capture (Cloud), along with upgrading and migrating the OpenText Archive Centre from the current AWS environment to Azure.
